betahaus Neukölln is our second coworking location in Berlin, that will open doors in April this year. The space is all about reconnecting with the makers and freelancers that made this part of the city awesome in the first place. It offers mix of team rooms, coworking areas, event spaces, and creative studios, but here are 5 fun facts you probably didn’t know about betahaus Neukölln.
Turning historical buildings into coworking spaces is becoming our new thing. After we took over the iconic HQ of German newspaper taz close to Checkpoint Charlie and became a proud owner of the relief sculpture Friede sei mit Dir also known as ''the cock of Berlin'', our second building in Neukölln has not less of an exciting history behind it.
betahaus Neukölln is being set up in the iconic Geyer Werke building on Harzer Straße 39 which was the oldest film factory in Germany. It was named by the famous Karl August Geyer, founder of Kino-Kopier-Gesellschaft m.b.H, that changed drastically the film industry in Germany. Numerous well-known movies of the post-war period were edited and produced there. Few of the titles you might have heard of already are Tatort, Das Leben Der Anderen (The Life Of Others) or the new crime-drama series Berlin Babylon.
The new betahaus Neukölln is filled with history from the inside out. The architecturally significant building on Harzer Straße 39 was built from 1927 to 1928 by the famous Otto Rudolf Salvisberg. Working in Germany from 1905 to 1930, the Swiss architect has created many important projects in Berlin, such as the UNESCO "White City" in Berlin -Reinickendorf and the U3 metro station Onkel Toms Hütte.
Now, this same building is slowly being transformed into a 6-floor coworking space. The building has access to a beautiful courtyard with a garden and a pond where you can take a break during the workday.
From the start of last week betahaus Neukölln is already welcoming the first startups and teams. Frontier Car Group was the first team to move in last week. Their team of 70 people took over the 4th floor of the building enjoying the spring sun from our attic. Frontier Car Group is a Berlin-based startup that develops, launches, and operates used-automotive marketplaces within emerging market economies, with operations in Nigeria, Mexico, Chile, Pakistan, and Indonesia.
Together with them we welcomed 56 students (or as they call themselves - Leinners) coming from Team Labs, Spain who will spend 6 weeks with us and use our office spaces and meeting rooms for their Berlin-based program and team-building activities.
The first Pro Members are also starting soon and we already love their missions. Ocean Now! is a NGO which has an amazing approach accelerating ocean protection. They work with the medium of art to motivate decision makers in politics and economy to end the destruction of the Ocean -Now! and have settled on ur 3rd floor.
We still have some free Team Rooms, so if you’re searching for a new home for your startup, learn more here.
From 4 March, the PRO Area in betahaus Neukölln will be officially open! If you’re not a member yet, now is probably the best time to set up your new membership here and join the party. Until the end of May, we offer all newcomers 50% off of their first Pro month, so make sure to grab that. With your Pro Membership you’re free to work from the Pro Areas of both betahaus Kreuzberg and Neukölln.
As a warm welcome to all newcomers and special invite to old members, we're throwing a Kick-off Breakfast on 12 March to show you around betahaus Neukölln and introduce you to the betahaus Team and community. We’re starting at 10h on the 3rd Floor of Harzer Straße 39. (Members Only)
In April 2019 betahaus is turning 10! It’s been a whole decade since we opened our first coworking location at Moritzplatz and if you know us well enough, you know that there’s no way we're skipping a 10-years anniversary without a huge birthday bash. For this one, we've invited Berlin-based artists and creatives to take over our building in Neukölln and turn it into a party venue and an immersive art exhibition.
With this birthday party we aim to say a big ‘’Thank you’’ to our community. For sticking with us during all these years and making betahaus what it is. Mark 27 April on your calendar, grab a friend and make sure to come celebrate with us our 10 years in beta.
In the summer, we launched a couple of new events in Neukölln like Freelancers, Unite!, The Backyard Sessions and My friend’s BBQ.
Freelancers, Unite! developed as our productive coworking session with freelancers from in and outside the ‘haus. Once a month, we picked an important freelance topic (such as taxes, time-management, etc) and invited experts to give us insights on the topic. We saw so many new faces and had the chance to come back closer to where we started from - the freelance, grassroots culture.
Another event, which started in July (and turned out to be our favourite events) were The Backyard Sessions. Organised by our queen of Neukölln - Robbin – the Backyard Sessions are our creative evenings with live music jams, movie screenings and cocktails.
This last event was hilarious because for quite some time, nobody knew exactly who organised it or invited them. The friend was throwing a BBQ for the community in the garden and this led to all our members joining and staying after for a beer or two with us.
‘’My favourite moment this year was the second friends bbq which was actually cancelled because of the rain forecast. But despite the bad weather, people show up and it turned into a super nice intimate evening with Elizaveta and Paul giving a garden concert.’’ - Robbin (Community Manager, betahaus)
''In July, it was great how the casual after-work BBQ turned into an impromptu acoustic blues jam session with Elizavetta Barsegova and Paul, who have the voice of an angel. Actually, all of the My Friend's BBQ's and Backyard Sessions were AWESOME.’’ - Paige (Head of Marketing, betahaus)
This year we released a new event format in Kreuzberg called ‘’The betaSalon’’. It's an open panel discussion which aims to give stage to important topics and give free speech on them. The fist one we did on the EU elections, last month we talked about changemakers, but our favourite one for this season stays ‘’Mother + Founder’’ where we partnered with FemGems podcast and recorded a live podcast episode for them having Madeleine Gummer von Mohl (betahaus co-founder), Kristine Zeller (co-creater of ooshi period underwear) and Luisa Hoffman on the stage.
Every September, our co-founders take part in the Techfestival. in Copenhagen, spending a few days disconnecting from the daily life and focusing on creating a better, more human-centered tech future. This year the think tank which included our co-founders Madeleine and Max came up with the TechPledge. The Tech Pledge was made to emphasize the need for a new direction in tech. Similar to the Hippocratic oath for doctors, the Tech Pledge is a promise to make tech a force for good and ensure responsible and sustainable tech leadership. It’s a commitment to driving a new direction in technology.
One of the most exciting projects for betahausX this year (which is also continuing in 2020) is their new startup challenge called The Werder Lab - a global startup competition that aims to reimagine the way clubs like Werder work with athletes, fans and partners.
This year couldn’t end without us having our favourite events - the end-of-the-year holiday party and the BETAPITCH Global Finals. On the 6th of December we saw the 9 finalists of the regional BETAPITCH competitions pitching in front of our jury. Congrats to Troy from Hamburg for winning the big prize.
We finished the year at our Holiday Party celebrating anything and everything at betahaus | Neukölln together with our members, friends of friends and our favourite artists from Passiflora LIVE, Tapete and Kotoe.
Thank you for being with us in 2019. It's been a crazy big year for us and it wouldn't been possible without your support, trust and the hard work of our amazing team. Have an amazing holiday time and we'll see you again in 2020.
