This Course is an introduction to fashion design and the aspects which are required to formulate ideas and translate them into a visual aesthetic representation. Through the course you will experience and implement all the stages from drawing a sketch up to cutting a pattern and finally sewing it to a basic piece, which can be modified.
The course is mostly focused on the practical side. You will learn principles of pattern making processes on a given example which can become a solid base for your own designs after the course.
Session 1 – Theoretical introduction to the field of fashion through the examples of various designers. Participants will get an overview of main principles of creation of a fashion collection on the example of the last ‘AUGUST’ collection: mood-board, silhouettes, proportions, colour charts, fabrics, detail drawings and accessories that help through the design development.
Session 2 – Based on the given inspiration, you will make a draft of your ideal project (a small virtual collection) and work out the details of one outfit, including a skirt or trousers. Prepare the presentation with the techniques learned in the first session.
Session 3-4: Fashion design mostly starts with basic patterns, which have to be modified into a fashion piece after checking the correct fit. Depending on what you prefer, you will construct a simple basic pattern of a skirt or trousers (if you feeling brave), adjusted for your personal measurements. Afterwards you will sew this piece out of test material in accordance to the material you prefer for your drawn creation.
Session 5: Manage a fitting as a pair and learn practically about the relationship between the human body and the paper pattern. Develop your personal basic pattern according to the alterations you marked during the fitting. Then sew the altered piece again and organize a second fitting.
Session 6: We will check the second basic pieces together and talk about the principles of alterations, that transform the basic piece into the fashion piece of your drawn outfit in session 2. Then we modify the basic pattern according to your designed piece. I hope this will inspire you to continue creating and realizing your ideas.
The workshop will be held by Josephin Thomas, one of the two founders of the Berlin based menswear label AUGUST. She also works as a costume designer for theatre plays and music bands. In her working space in Kreuzberg she creates and realizes her colourful ideas and is curious about the next steps
