INTENSIVE DESIGN COURSE – LEARN HOW TO DESIGN AND RUN A PROJECT

Do you want to turn your creativity into something tangible and useful? Do you have an idea you want to work on, or a project you would like to realise? Do you frequently work with designers and think it’d be good to be able to put yourself in their shoes? Or are you simply curious to know what’s behind most of the design projects you encounter?

This course will be just the occasion to understand the design process, to master specific techniques and to try these on an actual design project. But be warned, this will be an intensive course, and there will be homework!

As complex a process as design may be, grasping its basic dynamics is no witchcraft. During this month-long course you will be provided with both practical and theoretical knowledge on the many aspects of the discipline, while working in small groups on your own design projects, from start to completion. Twice a week for a month, you will be learning all there is to know in order to run a successful project, from basic research and design methodology to knowledge about materials, production techniques and ecodesign. You will discover the many hidden facettes of the design practice: how to integrate a project within a complex system, to design for social good, how to build a working prototype, as well as how to communicate and distribute your project.

In a nutshell, this course will be the occasion for you to learn:

  • What the different disciplines of design are,
  • Methodology to run a complete design process,
  • Research techniques to make your project as appropriate as can be,
  • To identify the context of a project and to integrate it as part of a system,
  • How objects can be crafted in wood, plastic, metal, glass, ceramics, concrete, paper pulp…,
  • How objects can be industrially produced in wood, plastic, metal, glass, ceramics, concrete, paper pulp…,
  • Tools to make a design project sustainable, and the many aspects of ecodesign,
  • Drafting techniques to quickly communicate your project as part of the working process,
  • Techniques to prototype, present and communicate your final project,
  • Tools to prepare your project for production.

The course will be taught by french designer Régis Lemberthe. He moved to Berlin after graduating as a master in “humanitarian design and sustainable living” from Design Academy Eindhoven, and started working on a variety of projects ranging from conceptual product design (A&Ré Design) and interaction design (Régißtudio) to collaborative design (Enable Berlin) and skill sharing (Maker LabBetahaus Build Or Buy). He has been giving lectures and facilitating workshops at Newcastle Culture LabAgen Musée Des Beaux ArtsMilan Public Design FestivalAmsterdam Center for Social and Contemporary Art, as well as in various places in Berlin.
